Over 90% of ESRD patients have elevated homocysteine, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular complications:

  • For every 10 µmol/L increase in homocysteine the risk for fatal cardiovascular complications increases by 20%. [1]

  • An increase as little as 1 µmol/L in homocysteine results in a 4% increase in the risk for access thrombosis. [2]

  • Elevated homocysteine is an independent risk factor for access thrombosis.
