Deplin® is an orally administered prescription medical food for the dietary management of suboptimal folate levels in depressed patients. L-methylfolate is known as a trimonoamine modulator (TMM) which boosts the synthesis of monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine). How does Deplin® work?
Deplin® works through a natural process within brain cells to correct an imbalance of the three important neurotransmitters that may be lacking. Deplin® is not an antidepressant, but may make your antidepressant work better by correcting folate levels in the brain. Correcting suboptimal folate levels in the brain is necessary to boost the production of these neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine) which may improve the way your antidepressant works.

Deplin® vs. Folic Acid

  1. Folic acid is a man-made product that needs to be broken down by the body through a lengthy 4-step process. Folate that comes from your diet (e.g green vegetables) needs to undergo a 3-step process. Deplin® can be immediately used by the brain to correct neurotransmitter imbalance linked to depression.
  2. Up to 70% of those with depression may have a compromised ability to break down folic acid into L-methylfolate, the only form of folate that can be used by the brain to make serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
  3. One Deplin® 7.5 mg tablet provides the bioequivalent L-methylfolate of 66 (800mcg) folic acid tablets.
